DAY 1 york Join your fellow travellers in York for a three night stay on a bed and breakfast basis in the heart of this historic city. DAY 2 york Spend a day at leisure exploring York, one of the most compelling cities in northern England. No visit would be complete without spending some time at the Minster, home to countless treasures, including priceless medieval stained-glass windows. The impressive central tower offers fine views over the city's rooftops. Perhaps take a stroll around the city walls, and be sure to visit the Shambles, an impossibly narrow flagstoned lane lined with medieval houses, some leaning at perilous angles. Immerse yourself in the Viking past of the city at the Jorvik centre, and visit the excellent Castle Museum with its collection of domestic artefacts. For real rail enthusiasts, the National Railway Museum, home to over fifty lovingly restored locomotives, is also a must see attraction. Meals: B DAY 3 North yorkshire Moors Railway & Whitby Enjoy a day of beautiful scenery as you travel on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway*. Originally built by George Stephenson, this restored railway connects Pickering and Whitby, passing through the rolling hills of the Esk Valley. You'll pass through lovely countryside, vintage country stations, including Goathland, familiar to many as Aidensfield in Heartbeat, before arriving in Whitby. You will have some free time in this delightful coastal town - perhaps visit the evocative cliff-top abbey ruins before returning to York by coach. Meals: B DAY 4 Settle - Carlisle Railway & The Lake district A highlight of your holiday is sure to be today's diesel hauled journey on the Settle - Carlisle Railway - a thriving local diesel powered service. This has to be one of the most scenic train journeys in England. Travelling over the soaring Ribblehead Viaduct towards the more gentle panoramas of the Eden Valley, you'll see lush rolling hills and rural market towns before arriving in historic Carlisle. Make your own discoveries in Carlisle, with its Celtic and Roman origins, perhaps visiting the impressive castle or ancient cathedral. Later you'll transfer by coach to the Lake District for your two night stay. Meals: B DAY 5 Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Today you'll join the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway as it steams its way through two of the western Lake District's most beautiful valleys to the foot of England's highest mountains*. Look out for deer and distinctive Herdwick sheep grazing alongside the line as it takes a dramatic route twisting high above the River Esk and valley road below. The return steam journey will take you back to your coach for the trip back to your hotel, pausing in one of the Lake District's many charming lakeside villages en route to allow you further time to explore this beautiful area.
