Explore the canals and cobbled streets of Bruges and the historic city of Ghent on this terrific value for money weekend. Add in the lively atmosphere of Lille, and this superb break has something for everyone.
From your base on the outskirts of Lille, our included full day excursion takes you to the charming Belgian city of Bruges, with its beautiful architecture and peaceful canals. You'll also have the chance to visit the capital of East Flanders, Ghent, and pick up some bargains in the Cité Europe shopping centre. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning A crossing to Calais. Continue to Lille centre with free time for shopping and sightseeing. In the early evening we arrive at our hotel for a three night stay. DAY 2 - Free to relax or why not join our optional A three-quarter day excursion to Ghent, one of Belgium's oldest cities, with its elegant medieval architecture, network of canals and cobbled streets. Take a horse and carriage ride through the centre or perhaps enjoy a boat trip along the canals. Two of the most prestigious buildings are the Belfry and the Town Hall, but not to be missed is a visit to St. Bavo's Cathedral to view the Ghent altarpiece, the `Adoration of the Holy Lamb', one of the most famous paintings in the world. DAY 3 - Join our full day included excursion A to the capital city of West Flanders, Bruges. The delightful old centre has an abundance of attractions from the traditional gabled houses and majestic churches to narrow cobbled streets and charming canals; not forgetting the world famous lace, chocolates, beer and of course chips with mayonnaise! You will have plenty of time to explore this beautiful city on foot, by boat through the network of canals or even on a horse and carriage ride through the cobbled streets. If you are interested in the intricate lace for which Bruges is famous, then a visit to the lace centre in Baalstraat is a must, or if chocolate is your weakness then you'll find an abundance of shops to tempt you. Bruges is also one of the most attractive shopping cities in Europe and much of the old centre is pedestrianised. The landmark of the city is the Bell Tower; the 366 steps to the observation deck afford the most amazing views of the whole city. Just below the Bell Tower is one of the most picturesque parts of this Gothic city, Burg Square with its impressive Town Hall. Finally relax and soak up the atmosphere in one of the many bars and cafés or visit one of the cosy tap-rooms to sample the famous Belgian beer. DAY 4 - A morning departure from the hotel, A visiting the popular Cité Europe shopping centre near Calais, before a late afternoon crossing back to the UK. Return to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL Typical of our hotels is the comfortable medium grade Campanile Villeneuve d'Ascq, on the outskirts of Lille. The hotel has a restaurant and all rooms are tastefully appointed with private facilities, telephone and TV. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift.
