Following the success of our Battlefields of France and Flanders tour, we have introduced this fascinating break visiting some of the sights of World War II in both France and Belgium, from your base in the delightful city of Lille.
YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning crossing to Calais. Late afternoon arrival at your centrally-located hotel in the Lille area for a three night stay. DAYS 2 & 3 - Free to explore the city of Lille, A with its pedestrianised Grand Place and charming historic centre `Vieux Lille', where you will find lovely shops as well as open-air bars and restaurants. Join our included excursions as follows: We also visit Mimoyecques, from where the V3 Super-Gun, Hitler's so-called `Last Hope' weapon, was intended to shell London. This fortified facility has a network of underground tunnels, and clearly shows evidence of Allied bombing raids. Breendonk Fort & Antwerp - A full day excursion visiting Breendonk Fort, near Antwerp. The fort was used as a transit camp by the Nazis prior to allied prisoners of war being sent on to concentration camps in Germany, and is now a national memorial. You will be able to visit the kitchens, offices of the SS and prisoners cells. On the way back to the hotel we visit the historic Belgian city of Antwerp, seriously damaged by German bombing following liberation by Allied forces in 1944. DAY 4 - En route home we stop at La Coupole, the incredible V2 Rocket Base near Calais capped with an incredible concrete dome. Continue to Calais for a late afternoon crossing to the UK, returning to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL You will stay in the medium grade Hotel Ibis Lille Centre Beffroi located in the centre of Lille. All rooms feature private facilities, TV and telephone. There is a bar and a restaurant in the hotel, and plenty of restaurants nearby.
