France is renowned for its magnificent châteaux, many of which were built to reflect the splendour of the French monarchy during its heyday. This superb holiday features the elegant châteaux and glorious gardens of the beautiful Loire Valley.
YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning crossing to Calais. Evening arrival at your hotel in Tours for a four night stay. This evening enjoy an included dinner at the hotel. DAYS 2 TO 4 - Free to relax and enjoy our excursion programme. The following excursions are included: Château Chenonceau & Amboise - A full day tour of Château Chenonceau and the charming town of Amboise. The château is an architectural jewel in the renaissance style, built on the site of a fortified mill which bridges the River Cher. It is also known as the `Château of Six Women' due to the various changes made to it by hostesses over the centuries. The pretty town of Amboise is situated between Tours and Bois on the banks of the Loire. Dominated by the 15th century Château d'Amboise and with its graceful bridge spanning the river, the town benefits from a good selection of shops and restaurants. Château Villandry & Château d'Azay le Rideau - Enjoy this full day excursion to the Gardens of Château Villandry. These unique gardens are laid out on three levels. The first has a large ornamental lake, the second a beautiful flower garden and the third a decorative vegetable garden. You will then visit the elegant Château d'Azay le Rideau, an imposing and impressive château constructed in the 16th century on an island in the River Indre. The following excursion is optional: Blois & Château Chambord - On this full day excursion you will visit the city of Blois, and its fantastic Royal castle, the Château de Blois. The residence of several French kings, the château has altered a number of times over the years, and forms an impressive centre to the city. One of the most magnificent features is the spiral staircase built in an octagonal tower by Françoise I in the 16th century. From Blois, you will move on to the impressive Château de Chambord, the largest castle in the Loire Valley, built as a hunting lodge and not designed to be a permanent residence. Highlights of this architectural delight include a superb `double helix' staircase, and a spectacularly elaborate roofline. DAY 5 - Depart after breakfast for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK, and continue to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL You will stay in a comfortable medium grade hotel such as the Hotel Turone in Tours. There is a restaurant and bar in the hotel. All rooms feature private facilities, telephone and TV.
