Highlights Include Poperinge The Somme & Vimy Ridge Thiepval Anglo-French Memorial Ypres Salient, Tyne Cot, Menin Gate & the Last Post Ceremony Flanders Fields Museum
A great value break visiting some of the most important sites of the First World War and the lovely town of Ypres. These historic and emotive locations contrast sharply with the modern towns that have evolved following the two monumental wars of the 20th century.
YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning A crossing to Calais. En route to your hotel we stop in Poperinge, which during the Great War was a haven of peace behind the front line. Here we visit Talbot House, or TOC H as it was known in army signallers' code. Continue to your hotel in the Lille area for a three night stay. DAYS 2 & 3 - Free to relax and enjoy our A included excursions as follows: The Somme & Vimy Ridge - A full day excursion, including a visit to Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park. Amongst the preserved trenches, our guided tour recounts the disastrous attack of July 1st 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. We continue to Vimy Ridge, a vital part of the German defence system, which was captured by the Canadians in April 1917. Ypres Salient, Tyne Cot & the Last Post Ceremony - A full day excursion featuring a visit to the infamous Ypres Salient before continuing to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British war cemetery in the world. Here you'll see the countless rows of graves from the notorious Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, together with the names of 35,000 missing soldiers. In the afternoon we also visit Ypres, devastated during some of the worst fighting of World War I but now beautifully restored. We stay until evening in order to attend the moving Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. DAY 4 - Included return visit to Ypres and a visit A to the Flanders Fields Museum before continuing to Calais for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK. Return to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL You will stay in a comfortable medium grade hotel such as the Ibis Lille Tourcoing on the outskirts of Lille. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, lift and all bedrooms are comfortably furnished with private facilities, telephone and TV.
