Discover medieval towns, pretty villages, ancient fortifications, hilltop castles and absolutely stunning scenery on this wonderful tour of the Dordogne region of France. With a rich and varied history, the unique landscape surrounding the River Dordogne is incredibly appealing, and our superb range of excursions will give you a real flavour of historic France.
YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning A crossing to Calais. Continue to Orleans for an overnight stay in the area on a bed and breakfast basis. DAY 2 - Continue on your journey through A France to your hotel in Gignac, near Souillac, for a four night stay on a half board basis. DAYS 3 TO 5 - Free to relax or enjoy our A excursion programme. The following tours are included: Collonges La Rouge, Rocamadour and Carennac - On this full day excursion you will explore the medieval village of Collonges La Rouge, before heading on to Rocamadour, spectacularly situated on a rock with wonderful views over the Alzou Valley. Finally you will visit the lovely village of Carennac on the banks of the Dordogne. Sarlat, La Roque-Gageac and Beynac - This full day excursion takes you to the attractive town of Sarlat, with its streets of impressive medieval buildings, then on to La Roque-Gageac for a relaxing boat trip along the River Dordogne. Afterwards you will visit Beynac, probably the most spectacular of the fortresses along the Dordogne. This 14th century edifice towers above a village that clings to a sheer cliff overlooking a beautiful stretch of the river. The following tour is optional: St-Cirq-Lapopie, Cele Valley and Figeac - Stop in the beautiful town on Figeac, where you will visit the medieval quarter, before driving through the scenic Cele Valley to St-Cirq-Lapopie, dramatically perched on a cliff above the River Lot. DAY 6 - You will leave the Souillac area, and A head to Albi, stopping en route at Cahors, famous for the Pont Valentre fortified bridge. You will have free time in Cahors, then move on through the beautiful Aveyron River Valley to Cordes, where you will visit the medieval fortified town of Cordes-sur-Ciel. You will then complete your journey to Albi for a three night stay. We include dinner at a local restaurant on one evening, leaving you free to dine as you please on the remaining two nights DAYS 7 & 8 - Free to relax and enjoy the historic A red-brick town of Albi, with its medieval quarter and gothic Cathedral of St Cecile. The following excursion is included: Carcassonne & Castres - This full day tour will take you to the dramatic town of Carcassonne. Surrounded by a turreted wall, this fortress town has narrow streets and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside from its battlements. You will also visit the pretty town of Castres for a stroll through the charming riverside quarter. DAY 9 - Depart after breakfast for your journey A home, returning to the Orleans area for an overnight stay on a bed and breakfast basis. DAY 10 - Continue to Calais for a late afternoon A crossing to the UK. YOUR HOTELS Your hotel in Gignac will be at the comfortable medium grade Hotel La Truffière. The hotel has a restaurant and bar. All rooms feature private facilities and telephone. In Albi you will stay at the comfortable medium grade Hotel Ibis Albi or similar. There is a bar and breakfast restaurant in the hotel, with restaurants close to the hotel. All rooms feature private facilities, TV and telephone.
