The beautiful rolling scenery of the Harz region, Germany's northernmost mountain range, is the setting for this fascinating holiday. We combine the magic of enchanting medieval towns with the chance of a ride on the unique Harz Narrow Gauge Railway.
As well as a super programme in the Harz, your journey also contains lots of interest. We include a visit to Hamelin, legendary home of the famous Pied Piper, plus you will see the impressive Möhne Dam of `Dambusters' fame. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and mid-morning A crossing to Calais. Continue through Belgium to the Dortmund area of Germany for your overnight stop on a bed and breakfast basis. Leipzig & Colditz - A fascinating full day excursion featuring a guided tour of Colditz Castle, the infamous World War II prison where Allied officers were held. Later we call in at the rejuvenated city of Leipzig, where you can see historic landmarks such as the Old Scales, the Town Hall and the Church of St Thomas, where Johann Sebastian Bach was choirmaster in the 18th century. Goslar & Quedlinburg - A three-quarter day tour featuring a visit to the UNESCO listed town of Goslar with its magnificent market square and great selection of shops and open air cafés. We continue to the delightful town of Quedlinburg with its pretty half-timbered houses. DAY 6 - Time to leave the Harz region and head A back west. Today an added bonus is a photo-stop at the Möhne Dam, the target of the famous wartime Dambusters raid. Continue to our final overnight stop in the Dortmund area on a bed and breakfast basis. DAY 7 - Continue to Calais for a late afternoon A crossing to the UK, returning to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL You'll stay in the comfortable Hotel Zum Schwan, in the small village of Nachterstedt, located around 50 miles east of Goslar. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, bowling alley and pleasant garden. Bedrooms feature private facilities, TV and telephone. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift.

DAY 2 - We continue north-east to visit the A medieval town centre of Hamelin, famous for the legend of the Pied Piper. The market square is impressive and you should also take a stroll down one of the side-streets such as the Kleinstrasse to see the beautifully restored medieval townhouses. We continue east to arrive in the early evening at our hotel in the Harz region for a four night stay. DAYS 3 TO 5 - Free to relax and enjoy our A optional excursion programme: Harz Narrow Gauge Railway - This full day excursion includes an unforgettable narrow gauge rail trip from Wernigerode up to the Brocken station at a height of over 3,490 ft. The sights and sounds are spectacular with magnificent views over the Hochharz National Park along the way. After time at the top of the Brocken Mountain, you enjoy the ride down and have free time in the delightful medieval centre of Wernigerode why not visit the marvellous castle overlooking the town?
