One of Germany's most picturesque towns, Monschau is just across the Belgian border in the volcanic Eifel Hills and is an absolute delight a fairy tale town with a castle on the hill, a rushing river, cosy cafés and welcoming taverns.
We stay at Einruhr, an attractive little village situated beside the Obersee Lake in the north of the Eifel National Park, approximately 30 miles south-east of Aachen. There are marked walking trails and a real feeling of being deep in traditional Germany. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning A crossing to Calais. Early evening arrival in Einruhr for a four night stay. DAYS 2 TO 4 - Free to relax and join our A excursion programme. The following excursion is included: Monschau - A three-quarter day excursion to explore this charming little town. The cobbled streets are lined with colourful houses, shops, cafés and taverns. You may like to visit the castle, Monschauer Brewery Museum, the Glass Works (Monschau has a 2000 year history of glass-making), the Red House Museum or the Mustard Mill. The following excursions are optional: Eifel & Ahr - On this full day excursion we combine two scenic regions, the forested Eifel Hills and the pretty Ahr Valley. Our first stop is the walled town of Bad Münstereifel, a lovely little spot full of traditional buildings. We then drive to the vineyards and wine growing villages of the Ahr Valley, calling in at the delightful red wine town of Ahrweiler. Aachen & the Three Countries Parts of Charlemagne's original palace survive in Aachen's Town Hall and the Cathedral, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town centre has plenty of shops and cafés. Close to Aachen is Vaals, the point at which Belgium, Holland and Germany meet. DAY 5 - Depart after breakfast for a late A afternoon crossing to the UK and continue to your original departure point in the evening. YOUR HOTEL Your hotel is the comfortable medium grade Hotel Seemöwe in Einruhr. You will be assured of a warm welcome from the English-speaking owner, Gunther, who will do all he can to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. Hotel facilities include a pleasant restaurant/bar, lift and a delightful terrace overlooking the lake where you can enjoy a drink. All bedrooms are comfortably furnished and feature private facilities and TV.
