Some hotels and lodges are simple in style but comfortable and service may be slow, but the delights of the island more than make up for this. You will stay in hotels/lodges such as the Royal Palissandre Hotel in Antananarivo, the Berenty Lodge in Berenty, Hotel Le Dauphin in Fort Dauphin and the Vakona Forest Lodge in Andasibe. Your hotel in Antananarivo has a restaurant and bar and all rooms feature private facilities and air-conditioning.
RING-TAILED LEMURS
Madagascar split from the African continent millions of years ago. Since then its wildlife has evolved along its own, unique path. The result is a staggering collection of animals and plants, most of which can only be found on this vast, unspoilt island.
This special adventure offers the chance to see lemurs, birds and more amazing wildlife in their natural habitats. Perhaps Madagascar's most famous indigenous species are the various types of lemur and you will have the chance to come face-to-face with some of them, along with myriad birds and amazing flora. Madagascar is a jewel waiting to be discovered and explored. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Antananarivo, Madagascar via Paris. On arrival, transfer to your hotel for a two night stay. DAY 2 - Join an included city tour this morning. Antananarivo, affectionately known as Tana' is the Malagasay capital and is filled with red-roofed houses, narrow cobbled streets and French colonial architecture. It is a fascinating city where day-to-day life is very much in evidence in the bustling market places where you can shop for typical handicrafts including embroidery, wood carving, baskets and jewellery. After an included lunch, you will take an easy drive out of the town to see the original site of the Merina Royal family the Queen's Palace of Ambohimango, sat on the beautiful blue hill' and offering great views of the surrounding area. DAY 3 - This morning you will drive eastwards to Andasibe through a stunning landscape of highlands and rainforest. En route we call at Peyreras to visit a private farm, home to reptiles, insects and chameleons. On arrival in Andasibe transfer to your lodge for a two night stay. The afternoon is at leisure. DAY 4 - Join an included walk within the Analamazaotra Reserve, more commonly known as Perinet. This fascinating reserve is home to the largest of the lemur family, the Indri listen out for the spine tingling whale like calls as they signal to one another. You may also catch a glimpse of other lemur species such as grey bamboo and the eastern woolly lemur, as well as a variety of birds such as the couas, vangas, greenbuls and ground rollers. The remainder of the day is at leisure, before taking a guided night walk for spotting nocturnal species such as the Madagascar nightjar bird. DAY 5 - After breakfast, visit the Lemur Park at Vakona to see lemurs close up. Enjoy lunch before taking the journey back to Antananarivo for an overnight stay. DAY 6 - Transfer to the airport for your flight to Fort Dauphin, locally known as Taolagnaro. This isolated town is located on a beautiful sandy bay that is dotted with old shipwrecks. In the late 17th century, the town was one of the original French colonies on the island. Transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. DAY 7 - This morning we include a city tour of Fort Dauphin, visiting the botanical garden of Saidi before lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you will drive to the Berenty Dry Forest Reserve for a two night stay. This privately owned reserve is the island's foremost lemur reserve and home to several different species, such as the ring-tailed, brown and sifaka. En route, you will see the local roadside fruit markets and the changing landscapes of the unusual spiny' forests, typical to the area.
