PINNAWELA ELEPHANT SANCTUARY
SPECIAL DEPARTURE
magnificent frescoes and writing carved into the stone walls by visitors from centuries ago. DAY 5 - After breakfast you visit the Dambulla Rock Temple which comprises five caverns, the largest of which is illustrated with paintings. Look out in awe at the incredible views from the top of the rock. Inside the caves, you can see some breathtaking carvings and statues of gods 150 in one room alone. You will also have the option to take an elephant ride while in Habarana. DAY 6 - Leave Habarana for the drive to Kandy, visiting the spice garden at Matale and a Batik factory en route. Situated at 1,600ft, the picturesque lakeside city of Kandy is the centre of Sri Lankan culture. Enjoy an evening city tour of Kandy including a drive along the shores of the beautiful Kandy Lake. The city tour will include a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. You will notice elements of Buddhism everywhere from temples and shrines to monasteries. DAY 7 - You will see the Royal Botanical Garden, today with its superb Orchid House. During the Second World War, these gardens were the naturally well-camouflaged headquarters of Lord Mountbatten. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax, or explore the city some more. You will also have the opportunity to experience a cultural dance show this evening before heading to the Temple of the Tooth for the Pooja' or blessing' ceremony. DAY 8 - Continue to the hill station of Nuwara Eliya set in a stunning mountain valley 6,000ft above sea level. Nuwara Eliya literally translated means City of Light' and was again a British base during the Second World War. It was turned into a replica British town, and signs of that can still be seen today. It also produces some of the country's best tea from the vast tea plantations situated around the town. On the drive from Kandy, you will see tea pickers on the plantations and visit a tea factory. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel for dinner and a two night stay. Enjoy afternoon tea at the Hill Club which is just a short drive away. Over a century old, the Hill Club is one of the few remaining signs of colonial occupation after being set up by a British coffee planter. DAY 9 - Enjoy an included excursion to Hortons Plains today. It will have to be an early start, with a packed breakfast, because the plains are not visible after 10am due to the heavy mist which falls. Sambhar deer and leopard may be seen here amongst the grasslands and forests, we also visit theBakers Falls. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. DAY 10 - Transfer to Colombo airport for your return flight to the UK. As you are flying westwards, you will arrive later the same day.
