Towering skyscrapers, monuments to Hong Kongs development as a world financial centre, form the backdrop to the busy harbour, where traditional junks still ply the waters, while street markets remain untouched by western influences and still provide an intoxicating taste of mystique and intrigue. At night the city is ablaze with neon signs, their reflections shimmering in the harbour. Its also a culinary delight and the shopping and nightlife are legendary. You will also pay a visit to Repulse Bay, where you will find Hong Kongs most famous beach, with soft sand and water that you can swim in. This is a lovely place to sit and watch the sun set. The Repulse Bay area is easily accessible from the city centre by bus and is also a major centre for shopping and entertainment. Continue to the floating village of Aberdeen, home to a thriving community of 30,000 people, living in a variety of junks, sampans and boats. Aberdeen is also host to some fabulous seafood restaurants. DAYS 4 & 5 - Hong Kong is incredibly easy to get around, thanks to excellent public transport links. Why not take the famous Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula for fantastic views of the Hong Kong skyline. In Kowloon take a walk along the Avenue of the Stars, Hong Kongs alternative to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This is an ideal vantage point to enjoy the nightly spectacle of A Symphony of Lights, where more than 35 buildings on both sides of the harbour light up in time to music played at certain vantage points along the harbour. Search lights and laser beams illuminate the sky for this fascinating performance, recorded as the worlds Largest Permanent Light and Sound Show in the Guinness Book of World Records. A former British Colony, Hong Kong was handed over to the Peoples Republic of China in 1997. Traditional Chinese culture is all around, mixed with British colonial influences, meaning that amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many customs of the old days still survive and there is much to admire. Why not take the time to stroll through the busy streets? The wonderful Western Market, built in 1906 and renovated in 1991, is full of shops selling art, crafts and fabrics, with a restaurant on the top floor. Hong Kong literally means fragrant harbour because of its history as a trader of fragrant wood and incense. English is one of its official languages, making it an easy place to visit. Hong Kong actually consists of over 260 islands, with Hong Kong Island being the second largest, and most populated. To see more of Hong Kong, why not take one of the optional excursions on offer? Take a day trip into the Western Territories, a rural area which offers a glimpse into more traditional Chinese life. Another option is to take a trip across the Pearl River to the former Portugese colony of Macau, handed back to the Chinese in 1999. The area is a centre for gambling, but amid the casinos are some wonderful historic buildings to enjoy, such as the 17th Century Church of São Paulo. DAY 6 Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. RICKSHAW 40 To view dates & prices click here To book click here
