THE MAORI TRADITION A hundred years ago, reeling under the impact of European civilisation, the Maori faced the prospect of complete extinction. Today, their rich traditions form an integral part of present day New Zealand. The traditional Maori arts of woodcarving, music, dance and rock-drawing remain strong, particularly on North Island, where most of their native communities are to be found.
