The fabled city of Shanghai and the mighty River Yangtze symbolise so powerfully the natural beauty, timeless history and the continuing enigma of China. Add the beautiful city of Suzhou and the bustling markets of Chongqing for a simply unique and unforgettable visit. Along a stretch of 150 miles of the Yangtze, sheer rock cliffs rise to stupendous heights on both sides of the turbulent, swirling waters.
The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, after the Amazon and the Nile. The river winds 3,900 miles through the country from west to east and is known by the name of `Changjiang' simply translated as Long River. The journey from Yichang to Chongqing is one of the most impressive sections of the river with wild mountain ranges, unbroken ravines, rapids and the dramatic `Three Gorges' of Qutang, Wuxia and Xiling. The various ports of call along the way offer great opportunities to experience China's ancient cultural heritage and picturesque natural scenery. YOUR ITINERARY Depart on your scheduled flight to Shanghai. DAY 2 - Arrival in Shanghai, where you will transfer to your hotel for a three night stay. During the afternoon you will be taken on a visit to the riverfront. DAY 3 - Shanghai has to be seen to be believed! As the fastest developing city in China, if not the world, this vibrant and exciting seaport is rapidly recovering its entrepreneurial prominence. Shanghai's colourful history is embedded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and today this combines with exciting modernity and a glimpse into China's future. At its heart is the Huangpu River, with its constant and extraordinary stream of water traffic. The Bund, the city's famous riverside boulevard, is lined with magnificent former colonial buildings which now stand as monuments to Shanghai's one-time notoriety. Yet across the river in Pudong District, a new `Manhattan' is rising from the former marshlands. The labyrinth of streets in the old town form a stark contrast with modern Nanjing Road Shanghai truly is a shopper's Mecca. By night, the city is a culinary delight with all sorts of local and international foods and entertainment that just goes on and on!
