DAY 6 - We leave Antigua behind today and head to Guatemala City where we enjoy an included city tour. See the mix and vibrancy of this city that is split into an old and new town. Due to its location, it is a perfect base from which to explore the rest of Guatemala. Later this afternoon drive over the border in Honduras and onto Copan for a two night stay. DAY 7 - Today you will visit the Archaeological Park of Copán. This important historical site is the remains of an old Mayan city. Learn about the Hieroglyphic Stairway Temple with its ancient writing and portraits of past rulers on the walls. In the afternoon, visit Las Sepulturas, a residential site for the Mayas which tells us a lot about how these people lived. You will also visit the fascinating Museum of Sculpture, which houses many pieces of sculpture that were found in the Mayan ruins. The most impressive is the replica of the Temple Rosa Lila which even depicts how the temples were decorated. DAY 8 - Leaving Copán today, you head out of Honduras and travel back into Guatemala. En route, you will pass through Quiriguá where you will see the tallest wood and stone carvings, in the Malayan world (known as stelae). They are beautifully detailed and are a true delight to see. Look out for banana plantations on the road to Flores, which is a small tranquil village situated on an island in Lake Peté Itzá. The views are stunning. On arriving in Flores, transfer to your hotel for a two night stay. DAY 9 - We include a visit to Tikal National Park today where you'll find temples in the heart of the jungle. Landmarks to look out for are the Pyramid of the Masks and the Great Mayan City. Enjoy an alfresco lunch in the park DAY 10 - Experience the true heart of Guatemala today as we travel through Bethal and Yaxchilan, then onto the River Usumacinta before reaching Corozal by boat at the Mexican border. From here, we continue to Palenque in Mexico where we spend two nights. Palenque is a vibrant and traditional place, and another important Mayan site. DAY 11 - Visit an archaeological site this morning and immerse yourself in the atmospheric ruins. Your local guide will explain the history behind the pyramidlike temples and palaces with their intricately carved walls and staircases dating back to AD 500. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. DAY 12 - Transfer to Villahermosa this morning to take a flight to Mexico City for a three night stay. DAY 13 - Today is devoted to exploring Mexico City, including the fascinating Museum of Anthropology. Old colonial buildings and new architecture live in harmony in the capital of Mexico. It is one of the world's largest cities, but don't be put off by its sheer size as there is so much to see and do here. Stroll through the tree-lined streets, past fountains and parks and stumble across museums and inviting eateries. Lunch is included today. DAY 14 - Drive north to Teotihuacan - a 2000 year old city built on a monumental scale by an unknown race. See its incredible Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, 39m wide Avenue of the Dead and Temple of Quetzalcoatl, with its unique stone sculptures. On the way back to Mexico City, visit the Shrine of Guadalupe. During lunch, enjoy being entertained by a Mariachi Band. DAY 15 - This morning is at leisure before transferring to the airport after lunch for your scheduled flight back to the UK via Madrid.
