This superb tour combines the imperial city of Delhi with the princely state of Rajasthan. This vast desert province of sweeping dunes is home to the grand forts and palaces of the Maharajahs, which personify the old order and recall the glories of a bygone era. Experience a magical mix of history, chivalry, romance, rugged natural beauty, with traditional arts and crafts and teeming bazaars, where women wear brightly coloured saris and an array of jewellery. So come with us and discover why Rajasthan is India at its best.
YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Delhi. DAY 2 - Arrive in Delhi and transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. This afternoon we include a city tour, featuring many of the major sights of both Old and New Delhi. Old Delhi is a 17th century walled city with city gates, narrow alleys, the enormous Red Fort, temples, mosques and bazaars. This is the Delhi of the Mogul Emperor Shah Jehan, and is largely preserved in its original layout. Among the many impressive sights are the Red Fort, Jami Masjid Mosque and the Raj Ghat, the cremation grounds of Mahatma Gandhi. The fabled street bazaar of Chandni Chowk is also worth a visit. By contrast, New Delhi is a planned city, designed in the days of the British Raj. From the impressive Viceroy's House, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, to the Indian Gate, the superb Laxminarayan Temple, Humayun's Tomb (aptly described as the predecessor of the Taj Mahal) and the Qtab Minar, there are plenty of wonderful landmarks to discover. DAY 3 - This morning we leave Delhi and transfer to the airport for the flight to Jodhpur. On arrival, transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. DAY 4 - Enjoy our included morning tour of Jodhpur, the Blue City. Jodhpur is an oasis in the arid Thar Desert and the second largest city in Rajasthan. It is a beautiful walled city, home to marble palaces, forts and temples. We visit the Mehrangarth Fort, one of the largest forts in India. This is followed by the Jaswant Thada, a royal crematorium where the Maharajah Jaswant Singh II is buried. This afternoon we depart Jodhpur and head to Jaisalmer, where you will stay for two nights. DAY 5 - Join our included tour of Jaisalmer, featuring some of the city's most opulent mansions, with their elaborate facades. We visit the stunning Jaisalmer Fort, which sits atop the 260ft high Trikuta Hill, standing guard over the desert. Within its walls you will find houses, beautifully carved temples and handicraft shops. This afternoon you can enjoy a tour of the Sam Sand Dunes. The stark beauty of this barren, wind-swept region, the rolling, golden dunes marching toward the horizon, is truly magnificent.
