YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Sri Lanka. DAY 2 - Arrival in Colombo. Colombo is a city of contrasts, with colonial architecture and bustling bazaars the architecture is elegant and sometimes eccentric, and its irregularity is proof of its varied past as an Arab trading town, Portuguese and Dutch accomplishment and a British colony until its independence in 1948. Our included afternoon sightseeing tour visits the commercial district called the Fort, the Wolvendaal Church, Independence Square, Jami-Ul Alfar Jumme Mosque and the Gangarama Temple. As well as all this, Colombo can offer visitors one of the worlds leading tea auction houses, Buddhist and Hindu religious pageants, depending on the season, international cricket and excellent entertainment and cuisine. DAY 3 - Travel to the Pinnawela Elephant Sanctuary to watch elephants feeding and training. Set up in 1975, this orphanage was originally designed just to care for baby elephants who had been orphaned in the wild. It has now become a sanctuary for injured elephants as well and is one of the largest and most well-known elephant sanctuaries in the world. The animals are encouraged to live as natural a life as possible, by being allowed to roam freely and form herds, bathe in the nearby river and eat a natural diet of leaves. Seeing these incredible animals up close really makes you appreciate the enormity and grandeur of them. You might even be able to bottle feed a baby elephant and there will be plenty of opportunities for photographs. This trip is truly an incredible sight and privilege. Continue to Habarana for three nights. DAY 4 - Morning visit to see the 600ft Sigiriya Rock Fortress (The Lion) which rises majestically from the jungle floor. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is an ancient palace, built around 780 AD. It was used as a monastery until the 14th century, and its ruins were discovered by a British explorer in 1907. Today, you can still see magnificent frescoes and writing carved into the stone walls by visitors from centuries ago. DAY 5 - After breakfast you visit the Dambulla Rock Temple which comprises five caverns, the largest of which is illustrated with paintings. Look out in awe at the incredible views from the top of the rock. Inside the caves, you can see some breathtaking carvings and statues of gods 150 in one room alone. You will also have the option to take an elephant ride while in Habarana.
