The civilisations of Rome, Greece, Byzantium and the Berbers have all left their mark, while the landscape varies from desert dunes to dramatic mountains and fertile plains. Explore Tripoli, Leptis Magna and Sabratha, and discover the charms of this fascinating country. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Tripoli. On arrival transfer to your hotel for a four night stay. Enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant this evening. DAY 2 - Learn about the fascinating history of Libya today with an included visit to the National Museum. Situated in the imposing Red Castle, the museum has a fine collection of artefacts. We continue to ancient Sabratha, renowned for its wonderfully preserved Roman theatre, baths and the Temple of Isis. DAY 3 - Morning departure from Tripoli for the journey through the spectacular Western Mountains region Qasr al-Haj, the most famous qasr (granary) in the region, then Tarmissa, an ancient cliff-side village. We continue to the village of Jadu, which offers an insight into the culture of the Berbers, who have dwelt in the area for thousands of years. After lunch we continue to Gharyan, set atop a plateau and best known for its underground houses. We visit one of these traditional dwellings and the excellent pottery shops before returning to Tripoli. DAY 4 - Today we visit one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Mediterranean ­ Leptis Magna. Leptis is one IMPORTANT NOTE You will be delighted by the warm welcome you will receive during your stay but should bear in mind that Libya is only just reopening its doors to tourism. This means that the infrastructure is still developing and changes may occasionally need to be made to the itinerary to take into account local conditions at the time. Libya is a strict Islamic nation. Alcohol is therefore not available or allowed into the country and ladies must conform to conservative dress. of the most complete examples of a Roman city, preserved for many centuries by a covering of sand. Among its impressive monuments are a magnificent amphitheatre and superb baths. We also visit the Roman Villa Seline, which boasts excellently preserved mosaics. DAY 5 - Enjoy an included tour of Tripoli's wonderful Medina, where you'll find some wonderful sights and traditional souks. Later, we head to the airport for our return flight to the UK. On Day 5 we fly to Benghazi in the morning. Visit the World War II Cemetery before heading across the Green Mountains to the ancient port of Ptolmais, then continue to Soussa for an overnight stay. The following day you will visit Apollonia, then drive to the well preserved city of Cyrene, where we stay overnight. The city is centred around the Shrine to Apollo, and the influences of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines are all apparent. Next day we visit the ruins of Al-Athrun, then continue to Slanta, an ancient Libyan temple. Return to Benghazi, visiting Qasr Libya to see the fine mosaic collection en route, before flying back to Tripoli for a final overnight stay. We include a tour of the Medina the following morning, before our flight back to the UK.
