YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Yangon. DAY 2 - Arrival in Yangon. Transfer to your hotel for a two night stay. Yangon still shows the influence of its British colonial past. Our guided tour of the downtown district begins at the Sule Pagoda in the centre of the city and takes us past some of the most splendidly preserved colonial buildings and ancient pagodas. Late afternoon we will see the historic Shwedagon Pagoda, the best time to visit, as the sun sets over the city. Towering 326 feet into the sky, this traditional stupa is covered with hundreds of gold plates and the top encrusted with 4531 diamonds, the largest is a huge 76 carats. This evening we dine at a local restaurant. DAY 3 - This morning's city tour offers wonderful photo opportunities as we stop at Kandawgyi Park and the Karaweik Royal Barge, before visiting the Kalaywa Monastery, home to around 1,000 monks. Every Burmese male is expected to spend some of his life serving as a monk to learn the ways of Buddhism. Each morning thousands of monks roam the streets to collect alms for their meals. We will have the chance to watch the monks' morning meal procession and walk around the monastery to see their everyday way of life. Next we visit the huge Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha, stretching over 220ft and one of the largest statues of its kind. After lunch at a local restaurant, we learn about the rich culture and heritage of Burma at the National Museum and home to the 30ft high Lion Throne, used by King Thibaw, the last Burmese King. Our next stop is the sprawling 70 year-old Bogyoke Aung San or Scott Market, a great place to pick up some reasonably priced souvenirs from lacquer ware to gems and jewellery, and try out your bargaining skills! Then we take a guided walk of Yangon's Chinatown area. This evening enjoy dinner and a folklore show aboard the Karaweik Royal Barge, a large replica of an old Burmese floating palace which lies on the back of two mythical hamsa-birds and is now used as a restaurant. We will also stop at Kandawgyi Lake, the perfect spot to view the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda at night. DAY 4 - We take a morning flight to Mandalay, the last capital of the third Myanmar Empire. Today, the country's second largest city combines a bustling commercial centre with its historic past and ancient culture. The old royal quarter and many monasteries is a showcase for Burma's 19th century art and architecture. Mandalay is also noted for its woodcarvings, silverware, tapestries, silk cloth, and other traditional craft products.
