Portland is a striking, tilted table of limestone four-and-a-half-miles long and less than 2 miles wide. Its unique geology and position are ideal for a wide variety of birds, animals and plant life. Overlooking the harbour is the castle, a perfectly preserved Tudor stronghold, built at the time of Henry VIII to defend Britain against French and Spanish invasion. Portland is situated at the centre of the Jurassic Coast and an optional excursion will explore the area's outstanding geology from the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods. The origins of Waterford crystal date from the 18th century and hand-cut glassware is still produced in the traditional manner, as you can see on an optional excursion to the Waterford factory. The tour includes demonstrations of glassblowing, cutting, engraving and polishing, plus the opportunity to talk to some of the master craftspeople and enjoy the visitor centre with its stunning gallery and showroom.
