throughout the world. As travelers visit Machu Picchu and the traditional Inca Trail in record numbers, we have developed this unique alternative route through the Andes to the Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu. This trek offers spectacular mountain scenery and rich archaeology without the crowds, along with the same sunrise experience over the ruins of Machu Picchu. Arriving in Lima, there will be ample time to walk around the nearby Plaza de Armas and explore Peru's capital as we anticipate the early morning flight to Cusco and the start of this epic Andean adventure to Machu Picchu. Touching down in Cusco, the scenery and altitude will take your breath away. Historic colonial buildings and churches cast shadows over the narrow cobbled streets that are thronged with local artisans, entertainers, markets and cafes. Allowing time to acclimate to the high altitude (3,360 metres), the day is yours to relax and explore. The morning of the hike we travel across the high Anta Plain to reach our starting point at a fascinating Inca shrine. Nearby is our trailhead in a quiet river valley at nearly 3,650 metres elevation. We hike over a 4,500 metres pass on this four day excursion; visit aqueducts, a pre-Inca

fortress, a ridge-top shrine looking out on glaciated peaks, and an Inca quarry where enormous hand-carved boulders await transport to the Sun Temple in the valley floor below. We revel in the peaceful isolation of this little-known route through the heart of the mighty Andes. We spend a night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins and enjoy a refreshing hot spring. With an early morning start, we will await the sun to climb over the mountains and pierce the misty clouds to reveal the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. After exploring the ruins and enjoying an informative guided tour of the citadel, we board the train back to Cusco, sharing smiles and stories of our accomplishment and wonder.

PLEASE NOTE:
Footloose travellers will join local groups for this special journey. Individual travellers will not meet up until noon of the second day in Cusco and you will be free until then to explore Cusco on your own.
