Travel through the heart of Mexicos independence, climb pyramids and volcanoes, sunbathe on exotic beaches and walk the narrow streets bathed in the history of Mexico's colonial past. Leaving Mexico City behind we head north to the ancient, spectacular pre Aztec ruins of Teotihuacan, where you can climb the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and walk the Avenue of the Dead. Journey on to the historic picturesque towns of San Miguel Allende and Guanajuato where the Mexican revolution began almost two hundred years ago. We then travel up to Zacatecas which was the first of Mexicos famous silver towns. Here we see fantastic colonial architecture and what many consider Mexicos most spectacular cathedral. Zacatecas is a sophisticated university town with wonderful museums and is a jewel rarely visited being just off the beaten track. Next, travel to Mexico's second largest city and capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, home of mariachi bands and tequila. Spend time exploring this city's famous markets and zocalo before heading down through rugged mountains of Michoacan to Patzcuaro, inhabited by the Purepecha Indians who have laced their distinct culture of the past with modern Mexico. Patzcuaro has lovely zocolos and markets. From our Patzcuaro base we will visit Angahuan where we can hike or ride horses to the Paricutin volcano, which erupted only a few decades ago and covered several villages with liquid stone leaving only the church bell tower intact. We make our way through the mountains to Taxco with an included stop at the huge cavern system of Grutas de Cacahuamilpa. Taxco is the most well known of modern day silver towns. Taxco is perched on the mountain side with narrow windy cobblestone streets and fascinating silver shops with intricate wares. From here we travel to Puebla famous for its talavera pottery, architecture and cuisine. We travel on to Oaxaca, a spectacular colonial town which many consider the highlight of this tour. It will feed all your senses with its sights, sounds and spicy aromas of the markets. The indigenous communities make this a real cultural treat never to forget. We will visit the impressive archaeological sites of Mitla and Monte Alban. Next we explore the beach town of Puerto Escondido and the well known resort of Acapulco. Sunbathe, swim, sea kayak, snorkel or relax under a palm tree. Watch the famous Acapulco cliff divers at La Quebrada before getting a taste of the vibrant nightlife in Mexico. Leaving the coast behind we head to unique town of Tepoztlan where they even have a UFO landing strip. It is the perfect last stop on this magical odyssey through Mexicos heartland.
