Eritrea is one of the world's newest countries and many do not realise how much it has to offer the intrepid traveller who has a sense of intrigue and adventure. The country is almost entirely formed of a long narrow strip of more than a thousand kilometres that runs south from the border of Sudan along the Red Sea to Djibouti. From stunning mountain ranges (the northernmost reaches of Africa's Rift Valley) to unique red earth formations to some of the most unspoilt coral sites in the world. Undiscovered Destinations offers two unique small group adventure itineraries: Eritrea Discovery and Dankalia Adventure. In addition we have introduced a 'Luxury week in Eritrea' tour staying at a fabulous boutique hotel in the UNESCO listed capital, Asmara. The Adventure trip takes in the length of the infamous Dankalia, whilst the Discovery includes more varied activities, including an opportunity to ride on the 100-year-old Italian built steam railway. Both include an excursion to the wonderful Dahlak islands to discover one of the best coral reefs on the planet. Our 'Luxury week in Eritrea' is the latest edition to our programme and is based on staying at the newly opened Albergo Italia boutique hotel. Asmara, with its pleasant year round climate and stunning Art Deco architecture, a legacy of the country's Italian colonial period, is almost certainly the most charming city in Africa. Asmara represents perhaps the most concentrated and intact assemblage of Modernist architecture anywhere in the world. It is therefore no wonder that the city has been included on a tentative list with an application for full UNESCO status currently being considered.
