Travel in slow luxury from Cape Town to the South African capital of Pretoria. Follow in the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes whose vision was to link African possessions of the British Empire through a continuous rail link from the Cape to Cairo. The dream never materialised but with the Victoria Falls Bridge completed in 1905, the southern section of track between Cape Town and the Zambezi was in operation before the First World War. accommodaTion The Vineyard: Originally built in 1799, this 4-star historic hotel lies in the leafy suburb of Newlands, a few minutes' walk from the elegant Cavendish Square shopping centre. The Waterfront and central Cape Town lies a 15-minute drive away. The landscaped garden has a river with attractive walks and varied plant and birdlife. Restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, and a Banyan Tree spa. 173 rooms with private facilities, mini-bar, tea/coffee making facilities, safe and satellite TV. On 17 Apr-14 Aug 2012 departures, an extra night is included free of charge. The `Pride of Africa': The Rovos Rail train comprises coaches of 1930's vintage, built to high standards with a club lounge and restaurant car recreating an atmosphere of elegance and grandeur. Meals are of a superb standard and all drinks are included. Travel is normally at just 40 mph, allowing enjoyment of the spectacular scenery from the open observation car. The tour ends with afternoon tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel. Day 4 At leisure. Day 5 A tour of the Cape Peninsula includes Hout Bay, Cape Point, the Good Hope Nature Reserve and Boulders Beach.
