hilst we would not normally feature a claim such as the `most luxurious train in the world', our long and special association with Rovos Rail and the positive feedback from our clients over the years has emboldened us to print this claim. Travel in slow luxury from Cape Town to the South African capital of Pretoria. Follow in the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes whose vision was to link African possessions of the British Empire through a continuous rail link from the Cape to Cairo. The dream never materialised but with the Victoria Falls Bridge completed in 1905, the southern section of track between Cape Town and the Zambezi was in operation before the First World War.
accommodaTion The Vineyard: Originally built in 1799, this 4-star historic hotel lies in the leafy suburb of Newlands, a few minutes' walk from the elegant Cavendish Square shopping centre. The Waterfront and central Cape Town lies a 15-minute drive away. The landscaped garden has a river with attractive walks and varied plant and birdlife. Restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, and a Banyan Tree spa. 173 rooms with private facilities, mini-bar, tea/coffee making facilities, safe and satellite TV. On 17 Apr-14 Aug 2012 departures, an extra night is included free of charge. The `Pride of Africa': The Rovos Rail train comprises coaches of 1930's vintage, built to high standards with a club lounge and restaurant car recreating an atmosphere of elegance and grandeur. Meals are of a superb standard and all drinks are included. Travel is normally at just 40 mph, allowing enjoyment of the spectacular scenery from the open observation car. There are three suites per sleeping car, furnished in Edwardian style with double or twin beds and a lounge area and five `Pullman' compartments per car with upper and lower ZIMBABWE berths or double beds. ·Victoria falls Compartments have airconditioning, shower and BOTSWANA ·plumtree WC and complimentary mini-bar. iTinerary Day 1 Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Cape Town. Day 2 Transfer to the Vineyard Hotel for four nights (five nights from 17 Apr-14 Aug 2012). Day 3 Visit Table Mountain, weather permitting (excludes cableway ticket), Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, picturesque Bo-Kaap, the Castle of Good Hope and take a walk through Company Gardens to the South Africa Museum. The tour ends with afternoon tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel. Day 4 At leisure. Day 5 A tour of the Cape Peninsula includes Hout Bay, Cape Point, the Good Hope Nature Reserve and Boulders Beach. Return via Simon's Town for a walking tour, harbour cruise (weather permitting) and the SA Navy Museum. Day 6 Morning departure on the `Pride of Africa' for the 19th-century health resort of Matjiesfontein. Travel through the night. Day 7 Reach Kimberley and visit the `Big Hole', Kimberley Museum and a street dating from the diamond rush. Day 8 Arrive in Pretoria for a city tour including the Voortrekker monument, Kruger House museum and Union Buildings. Overnight at 4-star Hotel Court Classique. Day 9 Overnight flight from Johannesburg to London. Day 10 Arrive Heathrow in the morning.
Day 9 Embark on the `Pride of Africa' mid-morning from Rovos Rail's private station in Capital Park. Traverse the Magaliesberg Range towards Mafikeng for border formalities. Days 10 & 11 Continue through Botswana passing through Plumtree for border formalities with Zimbabwe. Continue towards Hwange Game Reserve and arrive at Victoria Falls late afternoon. Transfer to Victoria Falls Hotel for two nights. Day 12 Morning excursion to Victoria Falls. Optional 15 minute 'Flight of the Angels' over Victoria Falls - £79. Evening sunset cruise on the Zambezi. Day 13 Fly to Johannesburg for the overnight flight to London. Day 14 Arrive Heathrow in the morning. Two further nights at the 5-star Victoria Falls Hotel, including breakfast and transfers.
