erhaps one of the world's most fascinating geological formations, the fjords of Norway stretch deep into the surrounding mountains and measure in depth up to a staggering 1,300 metres. To explore these ice age creations, we present you with an itinerary during the favourable period of September. It is only by sailing the Norwegian seas and visiting its magnificent ports and cities that the traveller can come to a true appreciation of the area's scenic splendour and architectural history. Seafaring and trade are, after all, traditions that have endured for many centuries and are deeply engrained in the psyche of these northern people, from the early Vikings or the protectionist members of the Hanseatic League to the pirates that sailed these waters. The chronicle of Bergen, set against a spectacular mountain backdrop and creating an `amphitheatre' setting, is closely linked to the sea and steeped in history. Now a UNESCO World Heritage City this charming coastal town offers a culture and history dating back to the ancient Vikings. The capital of Norway during the 12th and 13th centuries, it was one of the central ports of the Hanseatic League. The oldest parts of the town lie around the picturesque harbour, Vågen, with the only remaining example of the 18th-century merchant timber warehouses now the Hanseatic Museum. This Hanseatic influence remains today in the sharply gabled row of houses that line the picturesque harbour front. Archaeological discoveries can be found in the Bryggens Museum whilst models of Viking ships are a feature in the Maritime Museum. For an unbeatable city view, take the funicular train to the top on Mt. Fløyen. The cruise culminates with a stop in Stavanger, situated between the Boknafjorden and the lowland area of Jæren. The town's archaeological museum presents prehistoric items which were discovered in the surrounding county of Rogaland and the nearby Church of Sola was rebuilt in the original Romanesque style.
