With both programmes visiting Algeria and Spain, one allows for a more comprehensive visit to the Iberian Peninsula and the other takes in the south of Italy and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily. The Mediterranean was an important route for merchants and travellers in ancient times, allowing for trade and cultural exchange. It was known by the Romans as Mare Nostrum, Latin for `Our Sea', but employed other names including Mare Internum, meaning `The Internal Sea'. The Mediterranean way of life is thought to be an ideal balance of fine climate and exquisite food, which has no doubt influenced many of our lives. Day 7 Arrive Cagliari the Sardinian capital to discover medieval churches and a Roman amphitheatre. Set sail late in the day. Day 8 Early morning arrival in Naples for an included visit of Herculaneum to see the beautiful Roman villas that remained hidden for 1,800 years. Depart in the late afternoon. Day 9 Arrive in Palermo on the island of Sicily, with the opportunity to explore the rich history of this delightful capital.
