The Americas > Ecuador Health work experience in Quito, Ecuador Work in health in Ecuador's capital city at a not-for-profit relief agency that helps children in the poorest areas of Quito. The projects serve approximately 14,000 children, aged from 3 to 19. This is a huge number for such small teams to care for, so volunteers are desperately needed. Each clinic has a doctor, dentist, and some nursing and administrative staff. They welcome volunteers or specialists. You might help maintain the files, help at the reception desk or in the nursery, assist with patient check-ups, or provide general assistance to the doctors. Early Gap: the Ecuador volunteer experience Get a taste of foreign travel and volunteering on this two-week adventure. Meet new people, develop your language skills and enjoy an introduction to South American culture. Your time will be split between studying Spanish, soccer coaching and trips to local attractions, such as tours of Quito and the snow-capped volcano of Cotopaxi. The itinerary is well balanced to allow you to take language lessons each morning and then throw your energies into volunteering in the afternoon. Evenings are reserved for activities such as salsa dancing lessons! The Experience While things were hard to follow at first I soon fell into a role doing admin tasks and helping weigh and measure children, which the staff valued and appreciated. Nobody spoke English while I was there, so learn all the Spanish that you can! Sunita Raj Ideas for time off 1. Straddle the equator at La Mitad del Mundo 2.
