Kenya
World's best wildlife
For wildlife, Kenya is one of the best places in Africa and the world! This has brought tourists flocking to game reserve safaris for decades. But to escape the crowds and experience the real Kenya, there are a number of projects where you could make a difference to local communities and ecosystems.
Linda's Kenya!
LINDA WOODLAND TEACHING VOLUNTEER
1. Why did you decide to volunteer? My husband and I want to visit every country in the world, so when he retired we saw a great opportunity to get out in the world and make a difference. 2. Describe a typical day on your project. At a street children's project run by Danish missionaries, I worked with a group of 16-20year-old girls in the dressmaking class and we immediately started to knit and crochet squares to make a blanket. There was a real community spirit amongst the girls, and at the end of my month there, the knitted blanket was raffled and the patchwork quilt was the first item in a small co-operative that I suggested was started to help raise more money for the school. 3. What was your most memorable experience? On one of the weekends I was there, I walked with the girls to the top of the Menegai Crater, and the girls loved pointing out where everywhere was. 4. Would you do it again/recommend it to others? Volunteering is a positive and rewarding way to get out into the world and see places and people as they really are. A two-week tourist doesn't get the opportunity to see and experience what volunteers do!

Why Kenya needs you
Though a naturally stunning country, Kenya has only recently been able to start tackling some of its problems, including deforestation, high birth rates, abandoned children and high education costs that prohibit most kids from going to school. Initiatives launched by a new government in early 2003 are tackling some of these issues, and i-to-i volunteers are there to help.
