Sports: work experience at a surf school near Cape Town
A fantastic opportunity awaits you if you want to gain some valuable work experience at a South African surf school. Located at the appropriately named Surfers Corner in Muizenberg, near Cape Town, the school is managed by an ex-longboard champion and offers free instruction to many youngsters from disadvantaged areas, a number of whom have progressed to represent their region at the South African championships in Durban. The owner is acknowledged to be one of the most experienced surfing coaches in South Africa and is often involved in the lessons. You could learn to surf, sharpen your skills, or even progress to teaching others the basics. You might be assisting the staff with repairs, helping with sales or learning about surfing and how to teach it. No previous experience is required, but you must be able to swim. If you're already competent on a board, you will progress to instructor level much quicker. This is a great opportunity to improve your surfing skills, learn about the surf business and help underprivileged children to have a little fun. Muizenberg is also a great base for exploring the vibrant city of Cape Town and the nature reserves of the Cape of Good Hope.
The Experience
I worked in the surf shop every day and learned all about the boards and the technical side of surfing. The opportunity to surf whenever I wanted was fantastic and after several weeks I'd learned enough to help instruct others. I've left with loads of new skills and friends. Antonia Darbourne
